Apple is all set to give tough competition to the other streaming platforms. Apple recently announced its plans to launch in India. One of the first series it has commissioned is the crime series based in Mumbai, India, Shantaram. The series is based of a book of the same name and stars Radhika Apte along with Richard Roxbourgh. Radhika Apte will play an Indian journalist and Richard will play an investigative officer. The series is being shot in Australia. The Australian Government has announced a $5 million tax rebate.
Since the past few years, Radhika Apte is a streaming darling. She is part of the most popular web series. She was part of the first season of Sacred Games. She also starred in Ghoul, India’s first political-thriller-meets-horror.
Justin Kurzel will direct the twenty episode series that will be broken into two parts. Gregory David Robert wrote the original book, and Eric Warren Singer has written the script. There was a buzz about Shantaram being adapted to a film. That buzz has died out since.
More and more foreign content creators are looking at Indian stories for their content. While Apple Plus has just begun, both Amazon Prime and Netflix has earlier launched Indian stories. Amazon Prime made their India entry with Inside Edge. Netflix made their big Indian splurge with Sacred Games. Earlier, Netflix launched projects like Lust Stories, Ghoul and The Indian Detective.
